Digital immigration status (eVisa)

How to access your immigration status through the digital immigration status eVisa.
The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) transitioned to a digital visa system. Physical documents like Biometric Residence Permits (BRP)have been replaced by eVisas, providing a secure online record of your UK immigration status.
eVisa holders can access their immigration status and any attached conditions through the View and Prove service with their UKVI account.
If you have a Student visa valid after December 2024, and your BRP expires before that date, you must ensure that you transition to an eVisa. To obtain an eVisa, you must create a UKVI account; without it, you may face travel difficulties in and out of the UK.
About eVisas
How to create a UKVI account
To create your UKVI account, you'll need your BRP number or application number, which might be called a UAN or start with the letters GWF
If you don't have these, visit Gov.UK/eVisa for advice.
You'll need the following to get started:
- A smartphone, laptop, or any device with internet access. You can find the UK Immigration: ID Check app on the Google Play Store or App Store.
- Your identity document (BRP or passport).
- Application Reference (UAN/GWF Number), the reference number used by the UK Home Office to identify your visa application.
- Your date of birth.
- Your email address.
- A mobile phone number.
Watch the following video on how to create a UKVI account and access your eVisa.
Who already has an eVisa?
Some students have a UKVI account and an eVisa already.
- EU/EEA Swiss students who were able to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app to verify identity for a student visa application instead of attending a biometrics appointment.
- Students who applied in the UK for a student visa for a new course or extension of study and were able to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app.
- If you are a visa national you might have been given a new BRP as well as having an eVisa.
- Some students with EU Settlement Scheme pre-settled or settled status.
- Some students studying on a BN(O) visa.
- Some students who applied under one of the Ukraine schemes.

If you cannot travel to the UK before the latest acceptance date on your CAS you may need to defer the start of your course. If your arrival in the UK is delayed, you must contact the admissions team in your department or school to ask them if they can extend your latest arrival date. If you cannot arrive in the UK before this date then you may not be permitted to start your course.
The guide below outlines how to share and view your immigration status. Please ensure that you have the correct documentation in place to avoid complications when returning to the UK after the holidays.
You can watch a video on how to prove your immigration status with an eVisa
You must contact your department and the admissions team if you are likely to face any delays.
Updating your UKVI account details
- It’s important to keep your details updated to maintain your rights in the UK, enable international travel, and allow the Home Office to contact you about your application.
- If you change your phone number, email address, postal address, or passport, log into your UKVI account to update this information. Your eVisa is linked to the passport used during your application, so if you change passports, update those details as well.
- If you have dual nationality, you can include both passport details if your name is the same on both.
Reporting an error on your eVisa
It is important to check your eVisa to ensure that all the information is correct, including your personal details and the conditions attached to your eVisa. These include:
- the start or end date of your visa
- your work conditions
- correct sponsor licence number.
We recommend you report errors as soon as you notice them to avoid issues further down the line.
If you notice an error on your eVisa, you need to report it online:
- Visit the Report an error with your eVisa webpage on Gov.UK.
- Click the start now button.
- Confirm if you are currently in the UK or outside.
- In the question, “Are you having problems viewing your eVisa?” choose the option “No, the problem is something else”.
- In the question: “What is the problem with your eVisa?” select the error type(s) and provide the requested details.
- Provide your personal details and a reference number (e.g.: BRP, UAN or passport)
- Complete the form and submit.
Once you have submitted the error, you will receive an automatic email confirmation. You will receive a response in ten working days
If you have any difficulties, please email student-support@rca.ac.uk
Travelling with an eVisa
Before you travel, you should check your eVisa has all the correct details.
Sign in to your UKVI account to check that your eVisa is linked to your current passport or travel document.
You’ll still need to carry your current passport or travel document with you.
You should also get a share code to prove your immigration status before you travel. Your carrier may ask to see it. A share code is valid for 90 days.
The Home Office announced that they will further extend the ‘grace period’ for individuals to use expired Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) or Biometric Residence Cards (BRCs) for travel to the UK. This extension allows such travel until 1 June 2025, as long as the individuals still hold valid permission to stay in the UK.
