Professor Johnny Golding

Johnny’s work situates post-Newtonian analytics, new materialisms and the erotics of sense as ‘radical matter’, a practice-led encounter with contemporary philosophy, art and the wild sciences.
Golding was born in New York City, lived in Toronto, and carried out postgraduate studies (PHD) at the Universities of Toronto and Cambridge.
Previous roles include Director of the Centre for Fine Art Research, Birmingham City University; Director, Institute for the Converging Arts & Sciences (2009–2012), Professor of Philosophy in the Visual Arts & Communication Technologies (2000–2012); Teaching Fellow at The Slade School of Fine Art (Jan–June 2011 UCL) and Head of the Theory Department / Lead Researcher, The Jan Van Eyck Academie, Experimental Research in Fine Art, Design & Theory (Maastricht) 1998–2003. Golding was awarded an honorary Professorship in Philosophy and Imaging, Dundee School of Art (2009).
Golding’s latest works include: Entanglement: The Opera [in homage to Kurt Weill’s anti-fascist ‘White Cheese’], RCA, January 2019 and Of The Thick and the Raw: Cannibalising the 21st Century, OAR, Oxford, 2018. Her recent texts and poetic-philosophic installations have been exhibited at the Venice Biennale, Vienna, Bogotá and Berlin.
Her most recent publications include: The 9th Technology of Otherness (2016); In the Shadow of Akimbo Corporatism: The becoming-human of a people (2016); Ecce Homo Sexual: Eros & Ontology in the Age of Undecidability and Incompleteness (2014), On the Verge of Photography (2014); Ana-Materialism and the Pineal Eye (2012); Fractal Philosophy: Attunement as the Task of Art (2010); Conversion on the Road to Damascus: Minority Report on Art (2010) and The University Must be Defended (2012). She is also Executive Editor of Zetesis, an independent, internationally peer-reviewed journal for contemporary art, philosophy and the cultural condition (London/Glasgow).
