The Black British Artist Grant Programme returns for 2023, the fifth instalment of the initiative founded by Samuel Ross, A-COLD-WALL* & SR_A Founder, to support, identify and recognise exceptional talent.
The programme’s central focus remains to increase sustained integrations into the British creative industries for those from marginalised communities, increasing Black British contributions within the global creative economy across the fields of Fashion, Fine Art, Sculpture, Photography and Industrial Design– areas where opportunity has been historically scarce for the Black British community.
As with the first scheme launched in 2020, this will be implemented via three pillars of support: financial assistance in the form of a £2,500 grant for four newly onboarded grant recipients, £5,000.00 grants for three pre-existing grant recipients who continued to develop their practice on a local and global scale, and mentorship to ensure that talent are able to navigate their chosen industries with the necessary tools and strategies to propel them over the long-term. Applications are now open and close 23 October.
The Black British Artist Grant Programme has reached over 40 young artists, designers and business owners. Recent global successes include: Rhea Dillion (Fine Art – 2023 Tate Britain Solo exhibition), Feben Vemennby (Fashion - ELLE Breakthrough Designer Award 2023), Mac Collins (Furniture Design – 2023 Venice Architectural Biennale), and Nifemi Marcus-Bello (Industrial design – 2022 Serpentine Hublot Design Prize winner).
Grant recipients are selected based on exceptional talent and strategic thinking within their practice and applicants are reviewed by the grant’s advisory board, led by Samuel Ross. For 2023, The Princes Foundation will join the board which includes Yi Ng, A-COLD-WALL* & SR_A SR_A Co-founder & Partner, and RCA Vice-Chancellor Dr Paul Thompson. The RCA is proud to partner the programme with the Design Museum, V&A, University of Westminster and the British Fashion Council.
