Derek was a student at the Royal College of Art between 1959 and 1962. He studied Painting and worked alongside David Hockney during his time at the College, and later returned as a Tutor in both Printmaking and Photography (1976-8) and as Visiting Lecturer up until around 1981. He also became an RCA Honorary Fellow.

Derek featured with Pauline Boty and Peter Blake in Ken Russell’s 1962 film about the pop art movement, Pop Goes the Easel. He had a long and illustrious career, and contributed to the life of the College in more recent years, designing the front cover of the RCA Alumni magazine in 2016.

Very much a part of the Royal College of Art's community, he will be missed.
