Gayle Chong Kwan

Gayle Chong Kwan (b. 1973 in Scotland) is a London-based artist whose work has been exhibited and published internationally. She works with large-scale photography, installation, video, sound, and participatory practice to create mise-en-scene landscapes and environments out of arrangements of waste products, food remains, found materials and documentary sources. Chong Kwan’s work highlights relationships between collective histories,  fictional mechanisms and latter day myths and focuses on contemporary developments in tourism, planning and urban development in relation to their impact upon the environment.

Gayle's work has been shown at the 'Wastescape', Southbank Centre, London, 2012; 'Memory Trace', The Wellcome Trust, London, 2012; New Forest Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale, 2011; 'The Obsidian Isle', Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow, 2011; 'Save the Last Dance for Me', Whose Map is it?, Iniva, London, 2010; 'Memoryscape Moravia', Centro Cultural de Moravia, Medellin, Colombia, 2009; Tales from the New World, 10th Havana Biennial, Cuba, 2009; Utopia, Museu Berardo, Centro Cultural do Belem, Lisbon, 2009. Publications include 'The Grand Tour', 2009, 'The Obsidian Isle', 2011, and 'Invisible Twinning', 2009 and Awards include Vauxhall Collective Photography Award, and International Fellow, Arts Council England.
