Restoring nature
Aerseeds is a young venture set up to improve soil and support reforestation. It is developing aerodynamic nutrient and seed pods made from food waste, that work with nature to accelerate regeneration up to 10 times. Mimicking natural processes, its Aerseeds will be carried by the wind to cover large areas and reach difficult terrains, where they deliver nutrients and seeds to soils, depleted by human activity. The venture aims to provide a low-cost, low-tech and scalable solution to reforestation and afforestation efforts. Natural regeneration creates healthier forests, allowing pre-existing plant cover to choose the flora that will grow alongside it. With the Aerseeds approach, the venture aims to combine active and passive reforestation methods with to accelerate natural regeneration and promote denser forest growth that result in higher biomass and carbon sequestration per hectare. Aerseeds’ co-founders and twin sisters Begum and Bike Ayaskan both graduated from the RCA’s MA Design Products in 2015 . The venture was one of four winners of the Terra Carta Design Lab launched by His majesty King Charles III and Royal College of Art Chancellor, Sir Jony Ive, in partnership with the RCA and the Sustainable Markets Initiative.
